Vastu for Home — a practical guide to direction, layout & harmony

Vastu for the home is less a set of rules and more a way of reading a space: how light enters, where movement settles, which corners hold rest and which hold activity. This guide brings together the principles that matter most when applying Vastu to a contemporary home — directions, the entrance, the kitchen, the bedroom, and the quiet adjustments that change how a space feels to live in.

The five things Vastu cares about in a home

  • Orientation — which direction the building and the main entrance face.
  • The entrance — the threshold that draws energy in and sets the tone of the home.
  • Room placement — where the kitchen, bedroom, living and work areas sit relative to the centre.
  • The centre (Brahmasthan) — the heart of the home, ideally kept open and uncluttered.
  • Flow and light — how a person moves through the home, and where natural light reaches.

Direction by direction

North-east — light, water, clarity. The most sensitive zone of the home; best kept open, clean and unburdened. Good for meditation or a quiet corner.

East — sunrise and beginnings. A favoured direction for the main entrance and for windows in living areas.

South-east — the fire zone, traditionally home to the kitchen.

South — strength and stability. Suited to heavier furniture, storage and the back of the home.

South-west — earth and grounding. The classical placement for the primary bedroom.

West — children's rooms, study, the closing rhythm of the day.

North-west — air and movement. Guest rooms, secondary kitchens, transitional spaces.

North — prosperity and openness. Best kept light, with windows where possible.

Where each room belongs

Main entrance — east, north or north-east-facing entrances receive morning light and are considered the most supportive. A south- or west-facing entrance is not a problem in itself; the layout behind it matters more than the direction alone.

Kitchen — south-east is the classical placement, with the cook facing east. North-west is the second preference. Avoid placing the kitchen in the north-east or directly opposite the entrance.

Primary bedroom — south-west, associated with rest and stability. Avoid the head of the bed pointing north while sleeping.

Living room — north, east or north-east, where natural light and openness support easy gathering.

Home office or study — west or south-west works for sustained focus; the north-east suits creative or reflective work. The desk is best placed so the person sits facing east or north.

Bathrooms — best in the north-west or west; avoided in the north-east when possible.

Common questions

What is Vastu for a home?
Vastu (or Vastu Shastra) is a traditional system of spatial design that maps each direction and area of a home to a quality of daily life — rest, focus, nourishment, relationships. Applied to a home, it guides where rooms, the entrance, the kitchen and the bedroom are best placed so that movement, light and energy support wellbeing.
How do I check Vastu for my home?
Start with three things: the orientation of the main entrance, the position of the kitchen, and the position of the primary bedroom. Stand at the centre of the home with a compass and note which cardinal direction each occupies. From there, a Vastu consultation can identify which areas are in supportive directions and which need adjustment through layout, light, colour or placement of objects.
Which direction is best for a house to face?
There is no single best direction — east, north and north-east-facing entrances are traditionally considered the most supportive because they receive early morning light, but a well-designed south- or west-facing home can be equally balanced. What matters is the relationship between the facing direction, the entrance, and the internal layout.
Where should the kitchen be in Vastu?
The south-east is the classical position for a kitchen, with the cook facing east while cooking. When that is not possible, the north-west is the next preferred zone. The kitchen is best kept away from the north-east and directly opposite the main entrance.
Where should the bedroom be placed?
The primary bedroom is traditionally placed in the south-west of the home, which is associated with stability and rest. Children's bedrooms work well in the west or north-west. Avoid placing the head of the bed pointing north while sleeping.
Do I need to renovate my home to apply Vastu?
Almost never. Most homes can be brought into better balance through layout adjustments, lighting, the removal of clutter in specific zones, and the considered placement of mirrors, plants and key furniture. Structural changes are a last resort, not a starting point.
